Green tea and reducing cholesterol

Drinking green tea, as shown by the results of research carried out at the Beijing Union Medical Collegei n China, lowers »bad« (LDL) cholesterol, while the »good« (HDL) cholesterol are not affected. Therefore, researchers believe that it is good if people drink instead of health drinks more green tea. The study results may explain why the green tea is connected with lower risk of heart diseases. Analysis has shown that drinking green tea or its extract ingestion significantly reduced both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, but has no effect on HDL cholesterol.

These data have been obtained on the basis of 14 randomized trials in which volunteers drank for three weeks to three months green tea, or they ate an extract of green tea or they were placed in a group with a placebo. The average intake of green tea reduced total cholesterol by 7.2 millingrams per deciliter, compared with those in the placebo group. People that drank green tea on a average decreaseb by 2.2 millingrams per deciliter or a little less then two percent. Researches believe that a reduction in cholesterol happened because green tea catechins is coming, thanks to reduced absorbtion of cholesterol in the intestine.

However, that was a relatively small reduction of cholesterol. Just drinking green tea should therefore not be the only substitute for lowering cholesterol. Some researches also found out possible bad side effects of excessive consumption of green tea extracts. There are already reports of liver damage, green tea may also reduce the effectiveness of some medicines. However, experts believe that drinking green tea in moderaion may be a useful component of a healthy diet to preven heart diseases. Its benefits are more then just lowering cholesterol, it may also reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer and risk of death due to pneumonia.
